Brian Chandler rounded off a sporadic season in the Mazda MX-5 Super Series at the recent season finale at Silverstone with two wins, as his BC Cars Motorsport squad rounded off what had been overall a rather successful season with all three victories and a clean sweep of the top step as a result at the Silverstone International circuit in Northamptonshire.

Chandler’s weekend started off perfectly as he took pole position in qualifying, before leading away from the line in the opening laps with team mate Matt Pickford just a few tenths behind him in hot pursuit. Pickford was able to keep his team boss within half a second for most of the race as the pair circulated together, before Chandler found a little more pace in reserve and pull a gap of over two seconds by the chequered flag. It was Brian’s sixth Super Series of the season, taking the chequered flag with Pickford in 2nd place, followed by newcomer James Cossins driving SuperCup racer Aidan Hills’ brand new Mk3 hire car build in an impressive debut performance. Jo Marshall came home in 4th place with James Kell completing the top 5, followed by Patrick Collins, Clive Powles, Simon Fleet, Jeremy Crook and Declan Lee.

The second race ended up playing out somewhat identically to that of Race 1, as Chandler grabbed the lead from pole but immediately managed to pull a gap of over a second by the end of the first lap. Cossins had slotted into 2nd and incredibly showed enough pace to present a clean pair of heels to the rest of the field as he set off in pursuit of leader Chandler. However, his efforts couldn’t match the speed of Chandler, impressive as they were, as the former Mk1 MX-5 champion just had too much for anyone else to handle. Chandler cruised to his second win of the weekend by just over 4 seconds with Cossins going one better than the day before to take 2nd place with Marshall collecting the final podium place. Pickford had to settle for 4th place with Collins finishing in 5th, ahead of Powles, Fleet, Crook, Brooke and Adam Rowlandson.

A hat-trick certainly looked to be on the cards for Chandler in the third and final race, the last of the season, however Matt Pickford decided to throw the script out of the window by storming from the second row to the lead by the end of lap 1. Chandler was able to switch back past on the next lap and the pair once again repeated their Race 1 performance, circulating together with Chandler leading and Pickford in 2nd until a few laps to go. Pickford slipped past with around 4 laps to go and from there the two cars remained in this formation until the flag, with Pickford collecting his third victory of the season and Chandler collecting P2. Once again in a race of his own, James Cossins rounded off a brilliant debut weekend with another podium in 3rd, definitely marking him out as a contender for big things in 2020. Powles and Marshall rounded off the final top 5, with Collins, Rowlandson, Fleet, Crook and Darren Kell finishing off the top 10.

So, another season is complete in the Mazda MX-5 Super Series, and a massive thanks must go to every single driver that contested at least one round this year. We look forward to seeing what 2020 has in store!
