Bailey looks to build on recent success as Super Series heads North West to driver's favourite Oulton Park

Oulton Park in Cheshire marks the fourth meeting of the fledgeling BRSCC Mazda MX-5 Super Series, and while there are no points on offer to the competitors, the thrill of racing for victory certainly makes for an entertaining spectacle on track. The previous three rounds at Cadwell Park did see a very slight upset to the form book as the most succesful driver of the season so far had to settle for a weekend off the podium.

That driver was Joshua Jackson, fresh from his appearance at Snetterton the weekend before at the wheel of a Team HARD Ginetta in the British GT Championship. Having won five of the first six races of the 2018 campaign, Cadwell Park saw a slight turn in fortunes. He wasn’t able to better fourth place all weekend, something he would have been less than satisfied with, and this leaves him heading to Oulton Park ready to jump back on to the top step once more. It’s a circuit he’s found varying degrees of success at in the Mk1 MX-5 Championship in previous years, so 2018 will prove an interesting test on this occasion at the wheel of the Mk3 model.

His main rival, by contrast, had a much more satisfactory trip to Lincolnshire as Jake Bailey took full advantage of Jackson’s minor dip in form. He picked up two of the three victories while the third went to Tom Collins (not entered this weekend at the time of writing). Having also picked up a win at the opening weekend at Brands Hatch, Bailey has managed to close in on Jackson’s tally but will need to work hard again to usurp him again this time. On a twisty, undulating circuit like Cadwell, Bailey seemed to be the stronger of the two, and with Oulton Park providing more of the same, perhaps his form looks set to continue.

One driver who enjoyed gracing the podium twice at Cadwell was Simon Fleet, who can also boast Formula Ford experience as part of his repertoire. They were two of his best results of the season so far, and he will hope that his previous experience in both MX-5s and Formula Fords will serve him well. Another driver making fantastic progress is Jeremy Crook. On at least three occasions now, Crook has come desperately close to that first Super Series podium, and Cadwell was undoubtedly one of them. His performances at Snetterton also impressed many, and as he continues to get quicker this season with every lap he drives, it almost seems like a matter of when rather than if it will happen.

While Cadwell’s entry was somewhat reduced due to the main MX-5 SuperCup also contesting their TCR UK support rounds at Brands Hatch on the same weekend, here at Oulton Park the grid gets back up to more familiar numbers. Jake Bailey’s father Sam is back as is BLiNK Motorsport boss Richard Breland, while regulars Matt Pickford, Russ Lindsay, Patrick Collins, Simon Orange and Simon Woods are all here too. Plus, there’s a handful of SuperCup drivers in the mix too with James Kell making another appearance, this time joined by Clapham North MOT’s very own George Grant, former Lotus Cup sprinter Xavier Brooke and Geoff Gouriet. Finally, for her third meeting in a row, Liz Walton can’t resist the lure of the Super Series as she continues to enjoy the first few races of her career behind the wheel of an MX-5.

With the SuperCup heading to Oulton Park in August, anyone planning to contest that meeting may use this one as something of a test in order to prepare suitably. Nonetheless, the Super Series should provide an excellent prelude to what to expect when TCR UK and co rumble into town in a couple of months!
